Bluebells are an early sign that summer is on its way in Badachro

Summer has finally arrived in Badachro, for the time being! What happened to Spring?

Last week we had a fresh dusting of snow on the Torridon’s, this week we have sun and light winds.  The fauna has been late in coming through this year although now we have fantastic blooms of gorse turning the hills yellow and with that wonderful coconuty oil smell that it emits; the bog cotton is about to burst out on the machair and the garden at Ceomara is a lot more colourful. Best of all are the fantastic carpets of bluebells that abound.

The lambs that were born a few weeks ago are now sunning themselves and frolicking about in the field adjacent to the cottages.  The young seals also seem to be having fun in the bays here and at Shieldaig, with some brilliant aerial displays and play fighting in the shadows. There have also been a number of sightings of Sea Eagles locally but sadly not by us so no accompanying picture.  Although a few hours spent by the shores of Loch Maree will surely reward those who are patient.

Tom has been spending a fair amount of time out on ‘Damsis’ our 44 foot charter yacht, running sailing courses and taking part in the Scottish Islands 3 Peaks Race, with Fettes school providing the runners.  The porpoises are about and we are beginning to see more dolphins as well; sadly no whales yet this year. Tom has also been out sea fishing locally; interestingly we have had some haddock and cod amongst other species so they do seem to be returning to the Minch in numbers.  We await the shoals of mackerel signifying that summer is really here.  But the signs are good and we look forward to the warm weather and the beautiful summer scenery and sunsets.

Your hosts are Sue and Tom Watson. We moved up to the Highlands after bringing up our children near Edinburgh. As well as running our cottages we have a yacht charter business offering Skippered Charters and Tom also teaches sailing on our Badachro based RM 1260 yacht, ‘La Girafe'. We love living on the West Coast and make the most of all the area has to offer from the mountains to the sea. We also enjoy introducing others to this beautiful area in which we live. We live next to the cottages and are available as little or as often as guests require.
