Our Location

Ceomara Highland Cottages are located in Badachro, a small sleepy former fishing village, near Gairloch in the Wester Ross region of the Scottish Highlands.

The village is 3 miles along the single track road which winds from Gairloch to Red Point through remote scenery, past isolated lochs and burns. For a map of our location please see the link on the contact us page.

The Wester Ross region of the North West Highlands of Scotland contains some of the last true areas of wilderness in Europe and has the most scenic land and seascapes imaginable. An unspoilt natural environment of rugged mountains, remote lochs and outstandingly beautiful coastlines supports a wonderful diverse population of animals and plants.

Badachro is an excellent base for walks to suit all abilities. From level shoreline walks to Munro bagging, there will be a walk to suit all levels of fitness. Many walks have historical and geological interest, such as the 'Fairy Lochs' to see the war grave that is the crashed World War 2 B-24H Liberator and Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve, the very first reserve in Britain, established in 1951. It has several excellent mountain trails with the opportunity to see golden and sea eagles, mountain hair, cross bills and ptarmigan amounst other wildlife.

You will experience the freshest of air, the clearest of crystal blue/green waters, the most spectacular of sunsets and in winter the brightest of star lit skies.

Many expanses of exquisite sandy beach are within easy reach, the most outstanding being the old fishing station at Red Point, which also has a panoramic vista of the Isle of Skye, Raasay and Applecross. This beach was mentioned in Coast magazine as 1 of the top 5 places to go sea swimming in Britain and was a regular stopping place for the Royal Yacht Britannia, so the Queen might picnic on the beach.

Badachro is close to Loch Maree, one of the largest and most beautiful lochs in the Highlands. It is dotted with densely wooded islands , the woods being some of the most untouched and ancient native pinewoods left in Britain. The mass of Slioch fills most of the skyline on the north eastern shore.

There are many varied boat trips to be enjoyed locally, including cruises to spot whales, dolphins, porpoises and sea birds. Also a unique glass bottomed boat and creel trips, most leaving from Gairloch harbour.

The fishing enthusiast can take a sea fishing trip, fish from the rocks or go fly fishing in the isolated lochs and rivers (permits are available locally). Gairloch has a very good 9 hole golf course next to a beautiful sandy beach, from which some of the best sunsets can be seen set against the back drop of Gairloch Bay.

Inverewe Gardens on the shore of Loch Ewe at Poolewe is a magnificent 50 acre garden, founded by Osgood MacKenzie. The exotic and rare plants thrive as a result of the Gulf Stream whose warm currents are mostly responsible for the mild and damp weather.

During spring and early summer the grassy banks around Badachro are progressively covered with wild primroses, blue-bells and yellow iris. Amoungst the heather and undergrowth you can find several varieties of beautiful orchid.

Many other attractions too numerous to mention are available locally, a good supply of guides, maps, books and information are provided in Ceomara Highland Cottages to peruse during your holiday.

Binoculars are a holiday essential, to get a close up view of the seals that regularly play in the water where the fresh water enters at the head of Badachro bay. To watch the curlews and oyster catchers feeding at the end of the garden and the herons patiently fishing at the edge of the water. An endless variety of garden birds can be seen feeding in the trees to the side of cottages and their beautiful songs alot of the time is the only sound that can be heard outside.

Badachro is an ideal location for anybody who loves nature, fresh air and outdoor life.
