Birdlife up date - May 2010

Two of our guests over the last few months have recorded all the bird species they have seen around the cottages. They have recorded 48 and 50 different species. It is interesting to see the differences in the species recorded with the changing seasons.

On the feeders just outside the kitchen window of cottage 2, we now regularly see the woodpecker most mornings, often with several robins, thrushes and blackbirds. We have a family of blue tits nesting in the bird box which can be seen from cottage 1, they are always busily in and out bringing food for their new offspring. They, togther with many other birds can be seen on other feeders around the gardens.

The cuckoos have been present now for a few weeks, with their incredibly loud call. There seems to be at least 3 around Badachro, their call resounding around the bay!

We have been intrigued recently by a sort of 'metallic' machinery sound in an evening coming form the trees and also the surrounding croft land around the cottages. After some research, we have found it to be a snipe. It really is the most unusual noise, most unlike anything else we have heard.

Why not take up the challenge to beat the tally of 50 bird species during your stay!

We now have a spotting scope which can be used during your holiday to get a close up view of the birds and of course the seals in the bay (season dependant)

Otter foot prints in the snow and perhaps a pine martin

image 7th January 2010 - With the prolonged cold snap providing lots of snow and very few people walking 'off the beaten track' we have had plenty of opportunity for seeing tracks of animals we might normally miss.

At a local spot where we have seen otters a couple of times before, we saw clear signs of a fresh 'otter slide' and tracks of a large otter leading out to sea. In the opposite direction from the holt, were tracks to another point the otter must use to go fishing.

Unfortunately, we didn't see the otter in person, but what a treat to see such clear tracks in otherwise totally undisturbed snow.

Our neighbours regularly see the pine martin in their garden. Until now, we have had no evidence of a visit. However, we are convinced we have seen a track in the snow leading from outside the fence into the garden infront of Ceomara. Usually, I am told, he is keen on bread and jam, so we have now put some out for him, awaiting a sighting close up hopefully.

Bathroom refurbishment

12th December 2009 - We are proud to announce that our stunning shower room refurbishments are now complete, as well as other improvements to the cottages that have taken place during the period of a month we have been closed. New photographs are now on the gallery page.
